31 Day Challenge Day 19: Galaxy Nails

Today I have the whole galaxy on my nails! I've never tried this technique before, but some easy Google-ing and YouTube-ing showed me the basic sponging techniques and colours to use, and then I improvised!

According to most tutorials, the key feature is the various sizes of glitter topcoat at the end. Thing is, I don't really have any of those - I don't go in for glitter that much, and when I do, I prefer very dense ones. So in part to compensate for that, I tried to use polishes for the other steps that included shimmer or glitter as much as possible.

All of the polishes I used.
I started with a base of Chine Glaze Smoke & Ashes (after base coat, of course), a black with gorgeous, dense, tiny shimmer inside - it applies well enough with one thick coat, so it was great for this use as a base colour.

I then did the "nebula" sponging with a blend of Kleancolor Neon Yellow, Melon Green, and Neon Pink, and Essie Sure Shot, Sinful Colors Aqua, OPI Planks A Lot (a bit in the centres), and Orly Stone Cold on the edges, leading into the black. I dotted on some star clusters with CND Brilliant White, and dabbed on some star-flakies with Nails Inc. The Wyndham.

Yes, SO many polishes, but not actually that hard - because it's all so free, it goes pretty quickly. I finally added a few rhinestones on the accent nail as giant stars.

  1. Nicely done! I keep meaning to try doing a galaxy.

  2. These look amazing!
